Start with belonging cues
Greet students, use names, and begin with a quick win question. Belonging increases attention readiness.
Alternate input and output
After short explanation, ask for retrieval: pair-share, one-minute write, board attempt. Output creates engagement.
Make thinking visible
Ask for reasoning, not only answers. When thinking is valued, participation becomes safer.
Protect teacher energy
Use routines students can run. Engagement systems should reduce, not multiply, teacher cognitive load.
